Helping a parent freeze their credit: a practical checklist

The short answer

A credit freeze restricts access to a credit report, making new-account identity theft harder. In the US, placing and lifting a freeze is free. Your parent should contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, keep confirmation records and plan how to lift the freeze when needed.

How is a freeze different from a fraud alert?

A freeze restricts access until lifted. An initial fraud alert asks businesses to verify identity before granting new credit; it lasts one year and can be renewed. For a freeze, contact Equifax, Experian and TransUnion separately. For an initial fraud alert, contact one bureau, which must notify the others. Both are free, and a freeze does not affect the credit score. FTC: freezes and alerts.

Neither is a substitute for dealing with money already transferred or misuse of existing accounts. Do not stop the bank’s fraud-response process because a freeze has been placed.

Where should we start safely?

Use the FTC’s credit-bureau contact page to reach official routes. Be cautious with search ads or callers offering to arrange protection. A paid monitoring package or credit lock is not the same request as a free security freeze.

Our setup worksheet has one row for each bureau: request date, confirmation received, official login route and where recovery information is stored securely. Keep sensitive identifiers out of a shared family spreadsheet.

Keep Social Security numbers, identity documents, passwords and recovery codes out of this shared record. Record only the secure location the parent chooses. Do not mark a request confirmed until the bureau confirms it.

Complete phone/online requests generally have placement/lift deadlines of one business day/one hour, respectively; mailed requests generally take three business days after receipt, plus delivery time. Identification and authority must be complete; confirm each bureau’s process and response. USAGov: freeze and lift timing.

Can I do this for my parent?

Help with their permission and let them control identity verification where possible. If you need to act as a legal representative, ask the bureau what authority and documents it requires; being a relative is not enough by itself. FTC explains that representatives must establish their authority when protecting an adult’s credit. FTC: acting for another adult.

Do not impersonate your parent or save their credentials in your own account without an agreed arrangement. If authority is unclear, resolve it with the bureau and an appropriate adviser before submitting documents.

What happens when they apply for credit?

Ask the lender which bureau it needs and arrange the necessary temporary lift through that bureau. Check the confirmation and when protection resumes. A freeze is intended to create an access barrier, so plan ahead for a legitimate application. FTC: lifting a freeze.

Before ending your help session, ask your parent to locate the official contact route and recovery instructions. Do not lift a freeze as a practice exercise. Write a plain-language note explaining what was done and whom they can ask for help.

Some existing-creditor and other legally permitted access remains. A freeze does not close existing cards or stop charges on them. Continue checking statements and reports through the official AnnualCreditReport.com route.
